Trends, Tips, and Snippets

This Blog was created due to my obsession with list making and keeping all of the things I wanted to buy organized. Eventually there were just too many lists, so I decided to start this, a blog where I could keep all of my thoughts, ideas, and prospective shopping all in one place.

Style Spotter #25

Avaloi, both an English and Classical studies major, also seems to be minoring in style. This Umass Boston undergrad displays her interesting and offbeat taste wearing rolled J. Crew cargo pants, dark Jeffrey Campbell leather booties, and a dust orange chiffon blouse purchased from H&M.  Her accessories include the staple black ‘Le Pliage’ tote bag from Longchamp, a braided brown leather belt from gap, an array of colorful and classic bracelets from H&M and David Yurman, and her signature rings from stores such as Club Monaco, Anthropology, and Urban Outfitters. Pulling everything together nicely is a wrap headband from forever 21 with both a combined paisley and tribal print adding a quirky and totally cool appeal to her look.
When it comes to shopping for her standout ensembles, Avaloi states she enjoys thrifting and going to resale shops like The Closet and Rescue on Newbury Street but also shopping at stores such as H&M, Banana Republic, French Connection, and American Apparel. She says “Basically if I see something I like I’ll buy it.”  When asked to describe her style Avaloi replies, “I never fit a mold. Everyday I’m something different. As a good friend once said to me, I’m a style chameleon.”  Looks like switching it up is the key to keeping her style both curious and intriguing.

Bio major Paulina displays a stylish outfit and flair that can only be described as uniquely chic and classic fun.  Paulina is wearing a dark gray blazer from Urban Outfitters, and a sheer white tank with light pastel pink shredded jeans both from LF stores. Adding to the ensemble are funky multi-colored flats purchased at Zara, a large silver ‘statement watch’ from Michele, tortoise shell plastic aviators by Chanel, and a Marc by Marc Jacobs black tote bag. Paulina says she gathers inspiration for her unexpected and super cool style from “magazines and blogs- mostly fashion blogs like The Sartorialist,” and enjoys shopping at LF stores and Bloomingdales. She states “LF has edgy really different stuff that reminds me of New York street style” and describes Bloomingdales as more elegant; perfect for her self-described “classy but edgy” style.

Being a French foreign exchange student from France, it’s not hard to see Lucile has style. Not only her first day of fall semester, but also her first day ever at UMB, Lucile wears a short cream colored trench coat purchased from French store La Redoute, a flattering white and navy long-sleeved striped mini-dress from Etam, and black opaque tights. All of this paired with light brown western style booties from Gemo and a brown leather trimmed canvas bucket bag from Camaleu. Lucile describes her style as feminine and claims she “love[s] wearing dresses but also looking casual cool,” and being from France Lucille’s favorite stores of course still include H&M and Zara. Looks like great style is universal.

Old School Wedding Charm

New Leather Jacket!!!

Aqua Snap-Tab Leather Jacket

PRICE: $298.00

Meet my new leather jacket by Aqua and from Bloomingdales! Originally $298, I bought it for a mere $166 on sale, a true find! Had to have it shipped from a New York bloomies because my store didn't have my size in black but that was barely a problem and it was worth it. Buying it in the off season also really pays off (especially since i knew I definitely wanted one for fall) because with spring here it was half off.  I can't wait to wear it with black jeggings and a cute chiffon top!

Who Wears Short Shorts

So what I'm really looking for this summer... what I'm really on the hunt for, is a pair of perfect fitting jean shorts. And not any old pair of jean shorts. SHORT jean shorts. Sure I love my array of vintage levis I've made into cutoffs myself over the years, but his summer they just won't cut it. Yes, my latest obsession is True Religion Joey jean shorts. At $172 if I can't have those I might, mighttt have to settle for Abercrombie flagship shorts at a much cheaper price of $58. Here are the two shorts below, with some celebs in the joey cutoffs as well:

With an eclectic and globally conscious style, Brianna, a history and archeology major, wears a patterned dress from Marshall’s, a cream wide stretch belt from Urban Outfitters, a cream faux-crocodile leather bag also from Urban, and brown leather braided flip flops from American Eagle. Her accessories include a hammered silver ring purchased at payless, white rose-shaped studs from forever 21, and wrap bracelets from both Ecuador and China.  I caught up with Brianna and asked her a few questions:

How would you describe your style?
“I just throw things together. I wear a lot of dresses. I have more of a cultural wardrobe than anything; I like patterns and things made in other countries, I might describe my style as a bit feminine as well.”

Where do you like to shop?
“Forever 21 is my favorite, and T.J. Maxx is my second- you can find great things very cheap there.”

Favorite article of clothing you own right now?
“I have like 65 dresses, but I just got a one-shoulder banded gold dress which I love.”

Where do you go to for inspiration?
“I look at national geographic a lot. I find pictures with patterns and tribal prints and try to recreate them or find similar things in stores.”

Elizabeth Taylor
February 27, 1932- March 23, 2011

Here are some pictures of Elizabeth Taylor from one of my favorite movies, Giant. Giant was released in November 1956 and also stars Rock Hudson and James Dean. I think one of the most famous pictures from the movie is the one which I have listed first, directly below. Often referred to as 'Good Friday', Dean stands holding a rifle behind his shoulders (as though it is a cross), while Taylor kneels before him.
